I think that Simmel, more than a century ago, was right when he tried to clarify the thinking surrounding the landscape.

George Simmel’s idea of landscape is that it’s a combination of nature and human perception and interpretation, where nature is transformed by the subjective experiences of individuals.

In my travels I have often struggled to “see” the landscape because my focus has always been on the “near,” the embraceable at a glance without having to move my gaze too far. Despite this, some times the landscape was so overwhelming that it still left me breathless.
