The Selous Game Reserve, often referred to as Selous Park, is one of the largest and most diverse protected areas in Africa. Located in southern Tanzania, it spans an immense area of approximately 50,000 square kilometers (around 19,000 square miles), making it the largest game reserve on the continent and nearly three times the size of Belgium.
This park is renowned for its exceptional biodiversity and rich ecosystems. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982 due to its unique natural features and the critical role it plays in preserving Africa’s wildlife and wilderness. The park is named after Frederick Selous, a British explorer, hunter, and conservationist who contributed significantly to the understanding and preservation of the region’s flora and fauna.
The landscape of Selous Park is incredibly diverse, encompassing grasslands, woodlands, wetlands, and miombo forests. The Rufiji River, the largest in Tanzania, meanders through the reserve, providing a lifeline for numerous wildlife species during the dry season. This river system is home to numerous crocodiles and hippos, and it serves as a gathering point for various animals.
