Lake Kuril and the rivers surrounding it in Kamčhatka are home to the majestic brown bears (Ursus arctos beringianus).
It is a true paradise for nature lovers. Located in the far east of Russia, the site is home to one of the largest populations of brown bears in the world. These creatures roam freely around the lake and the entire peninsula. Kamčhatka bears (a particular subspecies of brown bear – Ursus arctos – native to the Kamčhatka peninsula and Karaginskiy Island), are physically similar to Alaskan Kodiak bears, although they tend to be darker in colour.
The Kuril lake in Kamčhatka
Lake Kuril is located on the Kamčhatka Peninsula, known for its rugged terrain and numerous active volcanoes. The lake covers 77 square kilometres and is surrounded by dense forests and steep mountains. The water is crystal clear and the reflections of the surrounding landscape create a breathtaking view.
Lake Kuril is home to a large population of brown bears, known for their large size and powerful presence. These bears are omnivores and feed on a variety of foods, including salmon, berries and small animals. During the summer months, the bears gather around the lake and along the river banks to catch salmon, which is their main source of food anyway.
The bears of Lake Kuril and the Kambalnaya River are active both during the day and at night, which makes it possible for photographers to capture extraordinary photos at any time. However, it is important to remember that they are wild animals and must be kept at a safe distance.
If you are a nature lover, Lake Kuril in Kamčhatka is a must-visit site. With its breathtaking scenery and large population of brown bears, it offers a unique opportunity to capture some of the most beautiful photos of these majestic creatures. Of course, it is not a comfortable place and you will have to get used to being there without any comforts, but it is really worth it. Remember to respect the bears and their habitat and you will have an unforgettable experience like the one I had with the great photographer Marco Urso.
